Smart Choices. Better Banking.

The First Financial Bank, Hereford opened for business on June 16, 1947 in a small building across from the current Post Office. The men who served on the first Board of Directors were: J.R. Allison, G.W. Brumley, Roger Brumley, J.G. Evans, O.G. Hill, Jr., A.V. Hendricks, President and Dudley Green, Vice President (inactive). William R. Phillips was the first cashier. At the end of the first year, deposits amounted to $1.4 million.

J.R. Allison was elected president and guided the fledging organization until August, 1954. Under Allison's tenure, in June 1950, the first drive-in window was opened on the north side of the building. This may have been one of the first such facilities provided by a bank in the Panhandle. Mr. Allison, who served actively from the opening of the bank in 1947 was elected Director Emeritus in 1986.

When the Hereford State Bank was chartered, many prominent business-men, farmers and ranchers felt Hereford was moving into a period of greater diversification in agriculture, industrial expansion and population growth unparelleled in its history. They felt Hereford could support two active banks and this faith has been justified in the fifty-one years of service by the Hereford State Bank.

Hereford State Bank built a modern 6,000 square foot banking house at the corner of Third and Sampson Streets and opened there for business on December 15, 1956. The present home of the Hereford State Bank is a 17,800 square foot building on the same block as the former building. The new facility was built at a cost of $1.2 million dollars and was occupied in June, 1977. In February 2002, a new drive up facility was installed and is connected to the main bank building. The new state of the art drive through includes six lanes, one being a commercial lane.

In March, 1974, the Hereford State Bank became a wholly owned subsidiary of the First Abilene Bankshares, Inc., a multi-bank holding company, headquartered in Abilene. Current combined assets of First Financial Bankshares Abilene are in excess of $2.1 billion as of December 1, 2004.

Hereford State Bank continues to expand its success by offering the automated telephone lines, an ATM machine located directly across from the bank, and Free Online Banking and Free Online Bill Pay.
